Girls’ Volleyball Rules

GENERAL

  • All participants are required to wear athletic shoes with non-marking soles.
  • Jewelry such as rings, watches, necklaces are strictly prohibited. Earrings should be removed or taped over.
  • Knee pads are recommended but not required.
  • The net height will be 7’ for 3rd – 4th Grade League and 5th – 6th Grade League. The net height will be 7’4” for the 7th – 8th Grade League.
  • 3rd – 4th Grade League and 5th – 6th Grade League will use a Volley Lite size ball. 7th – 8th Grade League will use Regulation size ball.

 

SUPERVISION

  • There will be a Volleyball Supervisor on the courts each Saturday during the season to answer questions and provide assistance.
  • Each game is controlled by a referee or supervisor who has full authority to enforce the Rules of the Game in connection with the game to which he/she has been appointed.
  • The decisions of the referee/supervisor regarding game play are final.

 

GAMES

  • Games will be played as six players vs. six players; however, play may begin with as few as four players on a side.
  • Each game will be three sets. The first two sets will play to 25 points. In case of a tie, team must win by 2 points, cap is 27 points. The third set will play to 15 points. In case of a tie, team must win by 2 points, cap is 17 points.
  • Teams are allowed one time out per set for one minute only.
  • Teams will switch sides for each new set.
  • At the start of the third set the official will flip a coin with team captains to determine which team will serve first.

 

SERVING

  • Players must wait for the official’s whistle before serving.
  • Players may serve underhand or overhand.
  • The server will be restricted to 5 service points, followed by an automatic side out.  Side outs for 5 consecutive serves will not award a point.
  • “Let serves” are permitted.
  • Served balls hitting the ceiling or obstructions shall be ruled out.
  • For 3rd – 4th Grade League and 5th – 6th Grade League, the ball may be served underhand from anywhere behind the 10’ line. Overhand serves must be served from anywhere behind the 25’ line (black line).
  • For 7th-8th Grade League, for the first 3 weeks, players may serve overhand or underhand from the 25’ line (black line). Once the 4th week starts and for the remaining of the season, all players must serve from the regulation line (blue boundary line).

 

PLAYING THE BALL

  • A team shall have three hits (excluding a blocked ball) to return the ball over the net.
  • When the ball touches any part of a boundary line it is considered “in”.
  • Players may not intentionally or unintentionally touch the net.
  • Players may not step over the center line at any time during the course of play.
  • Simultaneous violations by opposing players or an interruption in the game will result in a replay of the point.

 

ROTATIONS AND PLAYING TIME

  • All non-injured girls present on the team must play each game and be rotated into the lineup in a consistent manner. No eligible player can be allowed to sit out a rotation.
  • The right back player has the first serve.
  • Upon gaining the serve, a team must rotate. Each player rotates clockwise. Right front will rotate off the court while a new player will take the serving position.
  • Once established, the “rotating in” order must be followed.
  • No manipulation of the serving order while the players are waiting to be rotated into the lineup is allowed.

 

PRACTICES

  • Practice space in the Recreation Center will only be available in Gym 2 from June 13 – August 22 on Thursday evenings from 5:00-9:00 p.m.
  • Practice sessions are limited to 45 minutes, once per week.
  • Coaches may reserve a court up to 2 weeks in advance.
